About Cataracts

A cataract is the age-related thickening and clouding of the eye's natural lens. Cataracts are the main cause of vision loss in men and women age 55 and older. Although cataracts are associated with aging, there are other causes, such as certain diseases, eye injury, and some medications.

Vision loss from cataracts is gradual and often goes unnoticed as we age. For this reason, many older patients are unaware that they have developed cataracts. Typical symptoms of cataracts include: cloudy vision, glare and halos around lights, and the perception of color as very dull.

See how cataracts can affect vision and learn about surgical treatment.

Cataract Surgery

Our cataract surgeries are performed at the Surgery Center of Central New Jersey. This center and its staff are dedicated strictly to eye surgery, and it is operated by the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital.

IV sedation and anesthetic eyedrops are used and most patients actually remark that their cataract surgery was a pleasant experience

Recovery and Results

After the procedure you'll rest for a short while before you go home. One of our optometrists or ophthalmologists will typically examine your eye within 24 hours. You'll need to use prescription eye drops to guard against infection and help your eye heal. For a few days, you may need to wear a protective shield, especially at night to prevent you from rubbing your eye.

Everyone heals at his or her own pace; most patients see well enough to return to most of their routine activities the day after surgery. Once both eyes have been treated, you should experience the clearer vision you had before cataracts, and in the case of premium IOLs, your vision maybe even better than before.
