Types of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the conduit that carries visual information to the brain: the optic nerve. The health of the optic nerve is essential to clear, unobstructed vision. Glaucoma can be broken down into several categories:

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POGA): occurs when fluid accumulates in the inner eye due to a gradual restriction of the eye’s drainage canals
  • Angle-closure glaucoma: caused by a very sudden fluid buildup in the eyes leading to aggressive pressure on the optic nerve
  • Normal-tension glaucoma: occurs despite a normal eye pressure reading
  • Secondary glaucoma: develops when another disease contributes to increased eye pressure, causing vision loss
  • Pediatric glaucoma: can be congenital or develop at any point during childhood

An annual eye exam is essential to your health. If glaucoma is detected during your eye exam, your doctor will determine what kind of treatment is required to treat your specific type of eye disease.

How We Determine What Treatment You Need

During your eye exam, we will use cutting-edge testing methods to determine if you have glaucoma present. Typically this involves a test to measure the pressure inside the eye. If we determine you do have a glaucoma condition we will then use further testing to determine what type. The most common form of adult glaucoma is primary open-angle glaucoma.

Once we know the extent of the glaucoma-related damage to the optic nerve we can prescribe treatment that will lower the pressure of the eye to relieve the strain on the optic nerve. In the early stages of adult glaucoma, we can give you prescription eye drops to relieve pressure and preserve your vision.

Types of Eye Drops That Treat Glaucoma

There are several types of eye drops available to treat glaucoma. They include:

  • Alpha agonists: reduce the amount of fluid your eyes produce, and increase the amount of fluid the eye drains
  • Beta blockers: reduce the amount of fluid your eyes produce, decreasing eye pressure
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: lower the level of fluid produced by the eyes
  • Miotics: constrict the pupils, increasing the amount of fluid that is drained from the eye
  • Prostaglandin analogs: increase drainage, relieving pressure on the eye

If our doctor determines your glaucoma can be treated with eye drops, we will go over a detailed treatment place with you. As with any other medical condition, it is important that you tell your doctor what other medications you are taking, and let them know if you have been diagnosed with any other conditions.
